Apocalypto

Rating: 8.4/10
Genre: Action
Overall value for money and time: 8.7/10

Another of Mel Gibson's production after "The Passion of the Christ". Not only is Mel Gibson a good actor, he's apparently a very good director as well. Both movies are well made. While "The Passion of the Christ" is more gory, personal and emotional to some, "Apocalypto" is one tribal warfare movie that's the cream of the crop. "The New World" is another tribal movie that doesn't even come close to the superiority of "Apocalypto". You won't go wrong with this movie, this is one movie that will easily work it's way to the hearts of its viewers. A young tribal man is caught and is to be sacrificed to the gods. However, he manages to escape his fate just to be hunted down by the finest tribesmen. This movie is about determination, self preservation and of course the survival of the fittest, perhaps not so much the fittest in this movie. This is one hell of a movie that will leave you singing praises of it 10 years from now, maybe longer. A great memorable film that will leave you at the edge of your seats till the very last minute. I just love this movie! Truly a work of art!

Open Your Eyes to Vanilla Sky

1. Open Your Eyes
Rating: 7.9/10
Genre: Suspense
Overall value for money and time: 7.6/10

The movie is about a young, handsome but egoistic man who falls in love with his best friend's girlfriend. He has an affair with her but was disfigured in a car crash. His life changes, he who always depended on his good looks to get around, and he starts finding alternatives to make his life "perfect" again. This movie has an excellent plot. It holds great suspense even at the very end and harbors many twists in the story. I was emotionally taken aback after the movie and this is one movie that is truly thought provoking. If I'm not wrong this is a spanish film which is made in 1997. Comparing it with "Pan's Labyrinth" and probably other spanish films, I think this is one of the best there is. It has a disturbing factor in the plot and the mood of the film changes throughout the movie. This movie really does open one's eyes...

2. Vanilla Sky

Rating: 6.9/10
Genre: Suspense
Overall value for money and time: 6.6/10
This movie is a Hollywood remake of "Open Your Eyes", and one that proves inferior to it's origin. The movie plot is fairly similar, perhaps the man has a different occupation, his girlfriend has a different name etc. Apart from these minor details, the overall storyline is the same. I caught "Vanilla Sky" before watching "Open Your Eyes". I can't remember much of "Vanilla Sky" but thought it was just an average movie. However, I managed to watch "Open Your Eyes" on TV recently without knowing that "Vanilla Sky" was based on it. Throughout the movie, I was kept captivated and intrigued. You may give "Vanilla Sky" a miss but definately not "Open Your Eyes".

(Trivia: Did you know that the director for "Open Your Eyes" also directed "The Others"?)

Mirrormask

Rating: 5.2/10
Genre: Fantasy
Overall value for money and time: 5.0/10

Caught this movie on my local TV channel and I must say, this is quite a horrible film. The setting of the movie is CG dominated, and it gives a dark, dreamy and misty look to it. It just looks too fake for my taste and the plot, doesn't exactly holds one's attention span. This movie is about a young circus girl, who after a good night's rest, finds herself in a fantasy world. To get home, she needs to find an artifact called the mirrormask. However, time is running out and if she fails, she will remain in the fantasy world forever. While this may not be my cup of tea, it almost tastes like coffee to me. Despite being an academy award winner and an official selection which can be seen from a close up view of the poster, you'll probably feel cheated at the end of the movie.

Whisper

Rating: 6.3/10
Genre: Horror
Overall value for money and time: 6.1/10

This movie mainly comprises of cheap scares. Though it's rather refreshing to see new stars like "Sawyer" from "Lost" and "Sara Tencredi" from "Prison Break" taking the screen, the overall build up of the plot isn't commendable. The movie feels like a cheap production movie with limited casts, and limited effects. Still, I wouldn't say it's a bad movie. Worth the watch, but being someone who contemns movies with cheap scares, I have to mark it down cos' of it. The movie is about a young boy who is kidnapped. However, oblivious to the kidnappers, the boy is actually a devil in disguise...

The Good Sheperd

Rating: 5.7/10
Genre: Suspense
Overall value for money and time: 5.5/10

Another disappointing movie. This is a draggy, slow moving movie that will really test your endurance. You will not be able to sit through this film during the night. It's close to 3 hours and throughout the movie, you will find yourself slipping into a deeper maze than you were at the start, instead of being able to piece up the missing pieces. For other profound movies that's like a 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle, this movie is a 5000 piece. The problem is, even at the end of the movie, you're only at your 2500th piece. Personally, I think this movie has a messy organisation and the takes are all over the place. You normally won't be able to link the previous scene with the present one and somehow, it gets lost in the "mess". Cast like Matt Damon, Angelina Jolie and Robert DeNiro isn't enough to save this movie from being one of the most dry and boring pieces of cinematography I've seen. The movie revolves around a secret agent, somewhat, and how his life is affected by his occupation. I think this movie is based on true events. Still, it's far inferior to movies like "Insider" and "American Gangster", where despite being dialogue dominated movies, they still keep you captivated and leaves a pleasant aftertaste. However, for this movie, it gets wiped clean from your memory once the credits start rolling...

Conversations With Other Women

Rating: 6.9/10
Genre: Romance
Overall value for money and time: 7.1/10

I found this movie to be somewhat similar to "Before Sunrise" and "Before Sunset". The entire movie spuns around 2 individuals, a man and a lady. They met at a wedding party and the usual romance starts. They start revealing things about themselves and pretty soon, you'll be able to patch up the missing pieces. The cinematography is highly unique, throughtout the movie, the screen is split into 2 halves. Mostly, each shows a different individual, the man and the lady. There are some parts where one half shows a "future" scene while the other half still remains in the "present". Very interesting feel to it, but the ending leaves me quite lost. This could be a much better movie than I've rated it, just that for me, I don't really get it at the end of the movie - somehow it just doesnt piece up right... Still, it's a much better movie than "Lost in Translation". Hope this movie works for you.

Peter Pan

Rating: 6.8/10
Genre: Fantasy
Overall value for money and time: 6.7/10

A fairly magical movie but a very kiddo one indeed. CG dominated, with kiddish humour, but rather entertaining. The movie is set between two worlds, the real world and the fantasy world of Peter Pan, neverland. Peter Pan comes to visit one night, and brings a girl with her two brothers with him to neverland. However, one tends to lose their memory in neverland, and Peter Pan finds himself in a big dilemma - to keep her with him, never to grow old, but to lose all her memory, or to let her go which he will live the days of his life alone, forever as a young boy. Of course there's also the villian Captain Hook and Tinkerbell isn't the all too perfect fairy. Not a movie that works for me though...

The Day After Tomorrow

Rating: 8.1/10
Genre: Suspense
Overall value for money and time: 8.5/10

I thought this movie was very well done, which way exceeds my expectations. This movie came out during the time when "End of the World" scenario based movies took the leading role in the movie world. It has a great plot, great cast and a great feel to it. It doesn't have an illogical plot or an overly exaggerated scenario. I thought this was the breakthrough movie for Emmy Rossum and as usual, Dennis Quaid gives a top class performance. Jake Gyllenhaal at that time was to me still quite unheard of, but his roles in "Jarhead" and "Donnie Darko" really showed just how versatile an actor he is. The world is in treat of global warming and New York City is on the verge of entering an ice age. A climatologist tries to figure a way to save his son stranded in New York City. The setting of the movie will keep you cold with fear and it doesnt have the abrupt or ridiculous ending some end-of-the-world movies have. I highly recommend this movie for anyone who's intrigued by end-of-the-world scenarios and this might just be one of the movies you will add to your list of top movies.

The Last Legion

Rating: 6.5/10
Genre: Action
Overall value for money and time: 6.2/10

This movie felt like "Eragon". Though the packaging is epic like, yet, there seems to be a lack of punch to this movie. There are several unnecessary comical moments in this movie, which kinda lowers the professionalism of it. A young boy is the last Caesar of the Roman empire, which has been taken over by an army of villians. He and his last region of loyal warriors are to travel to the far north where they will find their last alliance. Everything is just an average in this movie. The battlefield scene isn't as grand as "Troy", "300" or "Lord of the Rings", thus it feels like a lower class production movie like "Helen of Troy" and "Eragon". Still, watchable for the light heartedness of this movie. Feels somewhat like a weekend afternoon movie - equivalent to the english action drama "Xena" and "Hercules". Comparisons are made solely to give you a rough idea of the overall "majestic-ness" of the movie.

Fracture

Rating: 6.5/10
Genre: Thriller
Overall value for money and time: 6.1/10
I came out "fractured" after the movie. I watched this movie because it is of my favourite genre and of course, there's also Anthony Hopkins in it. However, even with such a top class actor, he couldn't save this film from being a lower class movie. It's quite a dull movie, almost no action in it with massive loads of dialogue. The ending is just unsatisfying and the build up isn't all too terrific as well. A disappointment for me I must admit, because the only thing it satisfied me was... my curiosity. This movie is about a husband who found out that his wife was having an affair. He shot his wife, signed a confession and was about to be convicted of being guilty when the evidence didn't tally. The evidence against him was all void and an egoistic lawyer finally meets his match. This movie is similar to "A Prefect Murder" and perhaps other typical "Perfect murder where you kill your wife cos of adultery" movies. This one is slightly different in the sense that the murder takes place at the start, and you know for sure who the murderer is. The suspense doesn't lie in who really killed the wife, instead of how is Anthony Hopkins going to get away with it, or even if he does get away with it.

Quadrilogy of Hannibal Lecter

Overall rating: 9.4/10
Genre: Thriller
Overall value for money and time: 9.3/10

1. Silence of the Lambs

Great suspense thriller with top class casting by Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster. Anthony Hopkins stars as Hannibal Lecter, a highly intelligent pyschotic killer, though behind bars, lends a helping hand to Jodie Foster who is an FBI agent tracking another psychotic killer on the loose. Anthony's acting is realistically disturbing and any scene with him in it, though he speaks in a calm manner, you will still prepare yourself for any shock that might be imminent. Your heart will race throughout the movie and the pace of the movie is just right. Good story build up, including only necessary details while ensuring it doesnt bore you to death. One of the classic movies, the breakthrough movie for both stars indeed.

2. Hannibal

This has got to be the most disturbing movie of the series. I did not watch the quadrilogy in order. In fact, this was the first movie of the quadrilogy that I watched alone in a cinema. I had never seen any movie as graphic as this at that time which I watched it and I was feeling extremely uncomfortable in my seat. Be warned, the last part of the movie is extremely graphic and disturbing. Till now, it still lingers in my mind, a moment of cinematography that I will never forget. Commenting on the plot will spoil the ending for you in "Silence of the Lambs" so I would suggest you read no further and proceed only if you've caught the first installment of this series. Hannibal Lecter is scott free and contacts the same FBI agent in the prequel, however played by Julianne Moore this time. But do not fret, for her acting is highly commendable as well. The build up, suspense and everything is just as superior as the first movie.

3. Red Dragon

Contrary to my expectations, this sequel was much better than I thought it would be. Sequels after sequels, successful sequels are hard to come by. This sequel breaks the norm of your expectations, somewhat similar to the "Bourne Trilogy". It's a high paced movie, faster than it's two prequels. The plot is similar to the first, where another FBI agent, this time a guy, seeks the help of Hannibal to bring another psychotic killer behind bars. Now, you must be wondering, so is Hannibal Lecter put behind bars again? Isn't that lame? No, no, though it's the 3rd movie, it's actually a prequel to the first two movies. In other words, in order of the story line, this comes first, followed by "Silence of the Lambs", then by "Hannibal". Though for a strict critique, logically it wouldn't fit perfectly right because Anthony Hopkins should appear younger in this movie as compared to the first, which is not the case. However that doesn't bother me at all, which just happened to cross my mind while typing this critique down. Depending on individuals, this could be the movie that's far better than the other two. Personally, I'm one of them.

4. Hannibal Rising

"What? Another sequel-prequel movie? And there's not even Anthony Hopkins in it!!" That was my first impression of this movie. This movie is about how Hannibal became what he was since his younger days. So, it's a sequel-prequel movie like "Red Dragon". After watching it, I was satisfied with the movie, though not blown away, moderately satisfied. I didn't expect much for the movie, and this movie was just enough to fill my expectations. This is probably the worse movie for this quadrilogy but it's sure worth your time watching. It's quite gory but not comparable to "Hannibal". The plot build up is a slightly slowler paced for this movie. The casting is just as good, but overall not better than the rest of the other series. This movie gives you a slightly "oldies" kinda feel to it due to the cinematography and because it's supposed to be that way - during the time of World War II. I'm not one too fond of the "oldies" feel but it might just work for you though.

Top 3 Worst Horror Movies Ever Made

Movies range from blockbusters to bad movies... However, there are some movies that are just damn plain "HORRIGIBLE"! Movies that make you curse and swear at the end of the movie and make you wonder why in the world and how in the world can such a movie be made? It's time now, for me to reveal the top 3 worst movies I've watched so far... Behold... the moment of truth...

1. May

Rating: 0.4/10
Genre: Horror
Overall value for money and time: 0.1/10

A sick sadistic movie about a mentally unsound girl who is infatuated with finding the perfect guy. However, since we all know there is no such thing as a perfect guy, she pretends to go out with different guys.... and kills them, slicing a part of the body which looks prefect to her. All of this is done so that she can patch up her "perfect" boyfriend. If the story doesnt freak you out already, there is also a scene where she and one of her boyfriend are watching a sick movie about a couple kissing each other and eventually eating off each other's body parts. This is the most sadistic movie I've watched so far and none as senseless as this. I can still stomach slasher movies but this movie.... it's off the charts. It's the most disturbing movie I've watched, and one without logic I must add. Everything about this movie is just... off. Out of the top 3 worst movies, however, I have to admit that at least the storyline is the most acceptably senseless. Watch out folks, this movie will make a bad day worst, and might even drive you to insanity.

2. House of the Dead

Rating: 0.3/10
Genre: Horror
Overall value for money and time: 0.0/10

"Based on the best selling video game", the movie tagline says... cos not for that, one wouldn't be dumb enough to catch this movie. After watching this movie, that's when you know... you've been conned, big time. There are scenes in this movie that brings in the video game scenes.. out of the blue. Imagine watching a chasing scene... then suddenly.. the video game scene pops out where you can see the crosshair of your gun shooting those game zombies... Utterly ridiculously insultingly dumb!! Must I also mention that though it has the typical zombie storyline - a group of teenagers arrive on a zombie infested island and seeks refuge in a house... The way the movie is filmed adds "tragedy" to "typical"... Everything about this movie is a total flop. What is the most useless thing you can do in 2 hours? Do it, because this movie isn't even worth the most useless thing you can do.

3. Man-Thing

Rating: 1.7/10
Genre: Action
Overall value for money and time: 0.2/10

Am I being too harsh when it comes to the critiques on these 3 movies? No, not even for 1 second. Because I would save you a lot of time, money and even keep your blood pressure in check by informing you of such horric movie productions. This movie, out of the 3, has the highest rating because it has a slight built up of the plot here. Apart from that, it's just as bad as the rest. One cheap production movie that's far inferior to "The Blaire Witch Project". I was conned into watching this movie due to the tagline once again... "From the producers of Spiderman, Daredevil, X-men and Blade". Oh, pulesssshhhh... what kinda crap is that. It spoils the image of every Marvel movie ever made, especially those mentioned. A close ressemblance to "Swamp Thing", where a monster lurks in the swamp which a oil tycoon wishes to exploit. Here's 7 words to sum my feelings towarsd this movie: One hell of a stinking movie.

Havoc

Rating: 7.4/10
Genre: Crime
Overall value for money and time: 7.4/10

This is actress Anne Hathway's most daring movie so far. Most of you know her by her role in "The Princess Diaries" and "The Devil Wears Prada." This however, is one movie where she acts as a "bad" girl. A rather heartwrenching film about 2 girls who foolishingly tried to mix with a group of gangsters just for fun, resulting in emotional scars and a life of regrets. Drugs, sex and violence are prominent in this movie. If you're a fan of Anne Hathaway, you will not be disappointed at the end of this movie, but if you're one who watched it cos' of the plot, you might find it simply a typical bad girl gangster kinda movie.

Requiem for a Dream

Rating: 8.2/10
Genre: Crime
Overall value for money and time: 7.9/10

This is a dark movie about how the lives of 4 people are destroyed by the influence of drugs. The ending has one of the most disturbing scenes and the acting is so convincing you will feel like a part of you ended with the movie. I must applaude a character in the movie, the grandmother for a top class performance despite being a rather low profile actress. You will feel involved and emotionally shaken at the end of the movie, and the disturbing scenes will linger in your mind for a long time. It doesn't leave a good "aftertaste" but truly one of the most impacting movies I've watched thus far. Do give this movie a go for those who have strong "stomachs".

Haven

Rating: 6.5/10
Genre: Crime
Overall value for money and time: 6.4/10

The only reason I watched this movie was because of it's publicity stun, the 5 words, "From the makers of Crash". Though it might seem that this movie came out a later date than "Crash", it isn't true. That is why it has a similar cinematography to "Crash", especially the way a common scene is linked by different scenarios. One will find repeated features of the hit movie "Crash", thus, I would suggest watching this movie before "Crash" as it might spoil your element of surprise. However, a drawback of it is that should you watch this after "Crash", you may end up judging it by comparison. It's almost a lose lose situation, since you wouldn't lose much not watching this movie, I would suggest you give this movie a miss and go straight for the movie "Crash". That movie is worth more of your time and money. The movie revolves around the lives of a few individuals, each facing a different situation, and eventually rubbing shoulders with each other.

A Clockwork Orange

Rating: 7.3/10
Genre: Crime
Overall value for money and time: 6.9/10

In my opinion, I feel that this movie is highly overrated. Perhaps I'm just not one who can appreciate such "artistic" movies, which is also the case for "American Beauty". Somehow, I felt that it was rather a merry-go-round movie. The coincidences are too exaggerated and while it does touch on some issues of psychology and repentment, it doesnt touch too much on logic. It's a movie that's more disturbing than entertaining. Not a movie for me, but I didn't regret watching it either. The movie is about a group of vicious young lads who goes around torturing, beating, raping, and robbing people. Finally, the leader of the gang is caught and undergoes personality conditioning, a one way ticket out of jail. However, not everything goes as planned. This is one movie that opens up your mind and creates a deep impression, though not necessarily a good thing.

Breach

Rating: 6.9/10
Genre: Suspense
Overall value for money and time: 6.7/10

This movie is based on a true story whereby a potential FBI agent goes undercover and tries to dig up evidence against his boss, who is suspected of being the country's spy. This movie isn't a seat gripping one, the action in it is almost minimal and the only reasons why someone should watch this movie is either for interest, or for knowledge. The acting skills are good, the plot build up only an average and this movie will probably act as more of a lullaby instead of keeping you awake during the wee hours. Still, it's not a bad movie. You get to be more exposed to the prevalent conspiracies in the world of the "good" guys.

The Guardian

Rating: 7.9/10
Genre: Action
Overall value for money and time: 8.4/10

A movie with Ashton Kutcher in it usually spells senseless humour, like "Dude, Where's My Car". However, since "The Butterfly Effect", I thought you could do a rather good job in a more serious movie, which he does once again in this movie. This movie is about an arrogant coast guard trainee whose life was changed by his legendary coast guard coach. The scenes in this movie are touching and involving, the lines as well as the plot is highly meaning, and the acting is top class. A movie about self-determination, sacrifice and perserverence. This is another movie that gives you an unforgettable experience.

Hitch

Rating: 7.8/10
Genre: Romantic Comedy
Overall value for money and time: 8.1/10

This movie was way better than expected. Normally, being a fan of Will Smith, I notice that while his movies are funny, they are never touching. This is one movie that has both great comedy, as well as romance in it, romance that will touch your heart and might even break you down into tears. I loved the built up of this movie and the moral of the story. A great romance comedy that will link your hearts closer to your loved ones. A lovedoctor who gives good advice to his client is a failure himself when it comes to his own lovelife. There's a high chance your eyes will be watery at the end of the movie, be it due to the comedy, or the touching scenes of the movie.

Millions

Rating: 7.2/10
Genre: Comedy
Overall value for money and time: 7.4/10

This meaningful movie isn't about senseless comedy. It gives a more personally touch on human nature and it's comical in the way how "goodness" is perceived as "stupidity". A great self reflecting movie that while it might not necessarily make perfect sense, touches your heart in a unique way. It's a rather touching movie, though not one that will break your down into tears, and will leave a smile on your face at the end of the movie. A little boy finds a bag of cash (contrary to the movie title, the cash total is not a million, or millions in any sense but it's just a great deal of money) and believes that the money is godsent. Thus, he uses the money to make good, only to find himself unravelling the true colors of human nature.

Number 23

Rating: 8.3/10
Genre: Suspense
Overall value for money and time: 8.5/10

This for sure, is one good movie. Jim Carrey isn't just a gifted comedian, but a talented actor as well. This is the best of his more "serious" movies, comparing it with "The Majestic" and "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind". It keeps you on a roller coaster ride throughout the movie, unaware of what lies ahead. A man receives a gift from his wife, a book commenting about the number 23. The number 23, apparently, seems to appear everywhere and anywhere. He slowly begins to unravel the true mysteries behind the number 23 infatuation, just to find himself going deeper and deeper into a realm of sinister evil. A great movie to watch that I highly recommend. You will never view things the same way again. Creepy, eerie, shocking eye-opening movie that will definately make your hair stand on ends.

Nanny McPhee

Rating: 6.8/10
Genre: Comedy
Overall value for money and time: 6.4/10

A father of 7 children is unable to retain his nanny due to his spoilt children. Every nanny has come, and gone. Even the nanny agencies shut him out. However, an unexpected nanny comes knocking at his door one day, enters his world as well as the children's and changes their lives completely. A light hearted family comedy. This movie doesnt always make sense but has some enlightening momemts in it. Though I think it's just an average movie, it's worth watching. This movie was much better than expected, since the movie title isn't all too appealing. Personally, I thought the plot wasn't "full", somehow it felt like it only managed to scratch the surface of what it intended to put across. In other words, it has a good plot but a bad execution.

Rocky Balboa

Rating: 6.9/10
Genre: Action
Overall value for money and time: 6.5/10

I'm not a Rocky fan, I may have watched segments of the prequels on TV before but I don't recall ever watching a full Rocky movie. Therefore, I will only critique on the lastest installment of the Rocky series., "Rocky Balboa". I watched it out of curiosity. I mean, after such a long while, another movie is made on Rocky again. There must be something classic about it to make such a bold move. And there is. Despite the low rating, this isn't a bad film, just not my type of movie. It's not entirely an action packed movie, but more on how Rocky handled his older years in life as a retired boxer. This movie might appeal more to the mature audiences, where an aged Rocky wants to make the most of his life. Deep inside, his passion for boxing has not died, and decides to step into the ring one last time to battle the present boxing champion. This is a movie about battling the odds and finding oneself again during the darker years in life. Be advised that this is not a cool, grand boxing show like Rocky's previous movies but one that's more... I would say... closer to the heart.

Before Sunrise, Before Sunset Duology

Overall rating: 8.1/10
Genre: Romance
Overall value for money and time: 8.0/10

This duology is like good wine. Upon first sampling, it tastes ordinary, might not even appeal to some. However, overtime, it leaves a reminiscing aftertaste. I didn't watch this duology in order, I watched "Before Sunset" first which came out on a later date than "Before Sunrise". In other words, I watched part 2 before part 1. I had recieved complimentary tickets to the screening of "Before Sunset" and during the movie, I was thinking to myself "What the heck is this movie trying to show?". Even after the movie, I came out feeling... "Cheated". A few days later, strangely enough, it keeps lingering in my mind. It almost feels like a one-scene movie, without any cuts. The camera always focuses on a man and a woman talking to each other, who have not met for a long time. The setting is in France, not sure where though. It's kinda neither here nor there, but upon careful listening to their conversation, the missing pieces start patching up. Wittingly done, and a effort well done I must say. I don't want to say much about the plot, because basically, it's a very simple plot, and too much of it will spoil the beauty of this duology. Bottomline is, this duology is all about them, the "before" and the "after" chance encounters. Their conversation feels "raw", honest, and unscripted, with occasional humour in them. You will never have the chance to experience such a different kind of shooting technique or cinematography should you decide to give this movie a miss. While you might not be used to the movie initially, you will learn to appreciate it overtime... A great experience of romance!!

Warlords

Rating: 7.5/10
Genre: Action
Overall value for money and time: 7.8/10

I was hyped for this war movie, hoping it would be an epic one. It has been a long while since a movie of such grandeur has been made. Great actors like Andy Lau, Jet Li and Takeshi Kaneshiro are the main leads in the movie. The action scenes in this movie will keep you at the edge of your seats, and there are some real comical moments in the movie. The entire movie can be sum up in 1 sentence: A brotherhood of 3 warriors is shaken by power, love and greed. The ending is quite unexpected and the built up of the story is good. I for one, didn't like the ending, yet still, the action scenes are a real breath taker. Also, unlike other war movies, the killing scenes are not so gory and suited for a younger audience. It's not an epic movie, but one that is sure worth your time and money on. Unfortunately, I am unable to reproduce the local poster for this movie as it's not available anywhere online.

Lust Caution

Rating: 7.4/10
Genre: Suspense
Overall value for money and time: 7.5/10

There was a big hooha when this movie had finished production and was about to be screened. Censorship, bans, etc. However, it didn't appeal that much to me despite the much talked about sex scenes. However, since watching Golden Horse Awards, where it won the Best Motion Picture Award, I thought I'll have a go at it. I didn't manage to watch the uncensored version though, but I believe the cut scenes will not affect much of the storyline. Overall, it wasn't that fantastic. Greatly overrated, I thought this was just your average chinese movie. Classic chinese movies like "Infernal Affairs" was so much better than this. I don't know much of Director Ang Lee's movies, all I know of is "Hulk" and "Brokeback Mountain". Though "Brokeback Mountain" was also one of his great works, I didn't get the chance to see it. I liked "Hulk" though. I don't think one would miss much if he foregoes this movie, but the cut scenes might enhance the value of this movie though. The movie revolves around a group of patriotic students who plot to assasinate a spy for their country. Hence, they try to get close to his family where an unexpected love affair evolves. A movie with loads of dialogue and not much action in it. So, if you're one who gets bored easily by this kind of movies, I suggest you give this movie a miss. However, if you would like to broaden your horizon of perceptions, then this movie is the one for you.

The Da Vinci Code

Rating: 8.7/10
Genre: Suspense
Overall value for money and time: 9.0/10

This is one movie which you either love it, or hate it. I do not know how one can hate it though, perhaps due to the religious issues discussed in this movie which uproared a nation. But me being an atheist, allows me to see this movie, as simply a movie. Be it fiction or non-fiction, ultimately, you choose what you choose to believe. A symbolist embarks on a journey to deciper cryptic messages left behind by a victim who was murdered at the Lourve, a grandeur art museum located in Paris. I have personally been to the Lourve, and watching this movie made me reminiscence about the art haven. The plot of the story is highly intelligent and a memorable ending is prepared for its viewers. Good twist and even better twists throughout the entire movie. It opens the window of cryptograms, a whole new world of wonder and awe. Be amazed by this movie, and be prepared to keep your mind stimulated throughout. This for one, is not a no brainer movie, so if you're looking for a light hearted movie, you should put this movie on hold until you're ready for it.

The Zodiac Confusion

Rating: 7.2/10
Genre: Thriller
Overall value for money and time: 7.5/10

The movie is based on a true story, about a serial killer who writes letters to the newspaper companies requesting them to post his cryptic messages. This movie has received great reviews on it commenting on the accuracy of the content. I was once intrigued by the "Zodiac" killer , due to a cryptic encyclopedia book which first introduced me to him. I was inspired to purchase the book due to the movie "The Da Vinci Code". This movie deals not only with the tracking down of a killer, but also about the obsession of the people who wants him behind bars. Apart from killing the innocent, the "Zodiac" apparently also wants publicity and attention. Ironically, because of his cryptic messages, that was what he got. Throughout the movie, the clues which lead to revealing the true killer comes on and off. For my 2-cents worth of thought, it almost feels like the same scenerio for the movie "Scream." Since I do not wish to spoil the ending of "Scream", I shall not elaborate, for those who did watch it, you'll know what I mean. This movie is good for knowledge, but not one that will win the oscars anytime. Do catch it if you're intrigued by the elusive "Zodiac", if not, you can give this movie a miss.

Rating: 6.5/10
Genre: Thriller
Overall value for money and time: 6.2/10

The main difference in the title of this movie is that it is called "The Zodiac" while the previous is simply titled "Zodiac". Also, since I'm not one who's too familiar with the zodiac's works, this movie seemed alright to me. Lots of critiques have bombarded this movie for not following the facts and also the slowness of it. It's not as exciting as "Zodiac" but I do feel that it has something good about it. I thought it had a more organised built up of the plot and contrary to what you believe, you won't go snoozing on this movie. It is indeed inferior to "Zodiac" but doesn't fall too far back from it. At least there's Robin Tunney from "Prison Break" in it to add a little beauty in this film. The plot is identical to "Zodiac" so I won't be including it down.

2 Days in Paris

Rating: 7.5/10
Genre: Romance
Overall value for money and time: 7.7/10

I didn't expect much before watching this film and I must say, I was pleasantly surprised. It's not a movie that sweeps you off your feet, but one which couples in love can relate to. It is a strikingly honest film and a rather touching one too. It has a very "raw" feel to it, where what they talk about may or may not be relevant to the build up of the movie. I must really applaude Julie Delpy (Before Sunset) for a movie well made, not only is she the lead actor in the movie, she's also the producer and the director, and her real parents are featured in the movie as well. This movie makes a good date movie.

Paris Je T'aime

Rating: 7.8/10
Genre: Romance
Overall value for money and time: 7.9/10

I have been searching the web for the poster I recalled seeing at my local cineplex, where it is a picture of the Effiel tower on the background, and a bunch of words on the right side (similar to the poster on the left), but to no avail. There is not one such poster available which makes me doubt my own eyes, or memory. However, moving on from the failure to upload a poster of a local flavor, I can say that this movie is one that's entirely different from any other movies you're watched so far. It comprises of many short stories by many different directors but not all the stories are linked. It shows the different prespectives of the different directors with regards to love in paris. This is another hidden gem that must not be missed!! It's really refreshing to watch movies like this once in a while where it steals you away from the norm of movie cinematography, and which gives you a totally different experience.

The Illusionist

Rating: 7.7/10
Genre: Romance Thriller
Overall value for money and time: 7.4/10

This movie is adapted from a novel and the reason why it received such little recognition is due to the bad timing it was screened. It came out after "Prestige", which surpressed this movie's novelty and strengths. The genre for both these movies is similar, to do with Magic, just that for this movie, the purpose is different: Love. It has a good twist for the ending but upon thinking back on it, it might not make perfect sense. Still, this is one good movie to catch with your friends at a chalet during Xmas Eve or New Year's Eve. All in all, this movie is about a childhood love involving a magician and a dutchess but due to their backgrounds, were torn apart. When the magician, or rather illusionist grew up, he came back, and defeat all odds to win back the love of his life.

Hot Fuzz

Rating: 9.1/10
Genre: Action Comedy
Overall value for money and time: 9.0/10

This movie is one would say, Classic. This is easily the top British film which I've watched so far. Extremely hilarious and the jokes are original, and which stays - similar to "Dude, Where's My Car", only the jokes are somewhat of a higher "class" and more intelligently devised in this movie. Great plot, good acting by the pro-rated cast, great built up of the story and the ending is truly unpredictable. The movie itself does not allow such an unexpected twist in the story and yet it does. Let me rephrase that, the way the story progresses at the start will have you believe that it's just a typical comedy movie with a typical plot. You will be utterly amazed and impressed beyond words at the end of the movie. It has all the elements a good movie in this genre should have, and so much more. Do not miss this movie!! Highly recommended!!

Shaun of the Dead

Rating: 7.2/10
Genre: Comedy
Overall value for money and time: 6.9/10

This is a parody to the movie "Dawn of the Dead". It is decently funny but not one to leave a lasting impression. Don't worry about the scary factor in this movie, though it deals with zombies, it's far more funny than scary. A good movie to for the weekends to lighten up your mood. This movie is about a man who tries to make things right in his life, at the same time having to deal with a messy situation - a town infested with zombies. It's a British film, and the purpose of adding this information is to give a mental preparation for those who have difficulties in understanding the British accent.

The Wicker Man

Rating: 5.8/10
Genre: Thriller
Overall value for money and time: 5.2/10

I thought the movie title was rather unappealing. Still, I watched this film due to Nicholas Cage. I'm a huge fan of his, so I thought to myself, how bad can this movie be? I went in without any expectations and at the end of it, it felt like your average movie, one to be shown on TV on a weekday night. The built up of the plot was decent, the ending was unexpected and different from your typical movie. Sounds ok so far right? But I don't know, something's lacking in this movie, something big... and I can't seem to find out what it is. So I guess, I have to just leave it as that. A sheriff investigates the missing of a young girl in a town, but ends up discovering a larger mystery. You can give this movie a miss, wouldn't miss out on much anyways.

The Reaping

Rating: 7.1/10
Genre: Horror
Overall value for money and time: 6.9/10

This movie is exceptionally underrated. It has a good plot, good cast, good ending, good CG, and good build up. I just don't get it. Ten biblical plagues have been sighted in a small town and a woman who investigates paranormal stuff goes to that town to unravel the reason behind it. It is a real creepy movie which may make your hair stand on ends once in a while. Though I don't personally like Hiliary Swank, I thought she gave a good performance in this movie. There is a slight twist to the ending and even if you're not a religious person like me, this movie is well worth your time watching.

The Woodsman

Rating: 7.8/10
Genre: Crime
Overall value for money and time: 8.4/10

Imagine a movie with a bad poster, bad title, and bad publicity. What do you get? This movie. However, if you somehow managed to convince yourself into watching this movie just for the sole purpose of a talented actor, Kevin Bacon, you are in for a real shock. This movie will way exceed one's expectations, which is nil considering the above factors mentioned. This film is about a pedophile who tries to start a new life after his release from prison. Apart from "fighting" with himself, he has to "fight" with the prejudice of people around him. Truly a "chicken essence for the soul" movie. It has a good ending and a good insight into what might be the life of an ex-convict. If you're not one who can sit through massive dialogues or the absence of action, then this movie is not for you. If however you are one who likes thought provoking movies which shares insights of life, do not forgo this movie. You will be pleasantly surprised by this hidden gem.

11:14

Rating: 6.6/10
Genre: Crime
Overall value for money and time: 6.5/10

This movie is a rather low profile movie like "Identity", but not as good. It is somewhat similar to the way it is produced compared to "Crash" and since this movie came out in 2003 while "Crash" came out in 2004, I can only conclude that "Crash" kinda copied "11:14". I encountered difficulty in remembering this movie's title, if not for Rachael Leigh Cook (who I only remembered her role in "She's All That"), this movie might have been lost forever. My brother rented it at a local DVD shop and it's a movie about different people and how they all ended up in a 11.14pm car crash. Watchable movie for its good plot, relatively decent amount of humour and for Rachael Leigh Cook and Hiliary Swank ("Million Dollar Baby"). Apart from that, I don't recall any other thing fantastic about the movie.

The Prestige

Rating: 8.2/10
Genre: Thriller
Overall value for money and time: 8.2/10

Two rival magicians who will do anything to unravel the secrets behind the illusions for the other party. Good twist for the ending, but I'm not one who will swear by it's ingenuity. It is thinkable, unlike movies like "Memento" or "Saw". Overall, it has an intelligent plot, great actors like Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman definately add spice to the movie, and the special effects are slightly above average. This movie is one more on story, than any other. It shows how obsession.... can lead to... undesirable circumstances. Me being an amateur magician on my own, may have in some sense affected my perceptions on this movie. Do give this movie a go if you have the time. Not one to leave you at "hello" (like in the movie "Jerry Maguire"), but one which will surely leave a print under your list of good movies.

Memento

Rating: 8.8/10
Genre: Crime
Overall value for money and time: 9.2/10

This movie is about a guy who suffers from short-term memory loss, who struggles with his illness to find out the killer of his wife. The ending for this movie is highly unpredictable and the plot itself is a true gem. No such similar movies have been made and it brings you into a world of frightening uncertainty, into his world where he can trust no one, not even yourself. Another such movie apart from "Crash" that will linger in your mind for a long time. A truly impressionable film. It's a good catch, don't miss this movie!

Crash

Rating: 9.2/10
Genre: Crime
Overall value for money and time: 9.6/10

This is an exceptional film. However, I had great difficulty thinking of the genre for this movie. It's not a simple movie you see. Not one that you can categorised simply by "action" or "romance" or "thriller". After much thought, the best term to use, and it's the first time I've introduced this term is "crime". It kinda makes sense since "crime" itself explores a wide range of directives. Do not mistake crime for being just killing sprees and sinister plotting to rob banks. Crime is not restricted by these acts. One such other example is racism, which is addressed in this movie, to a great extend. This movie revolves around several characters in different situations all being interwoven into one big situation. I must say that it's a rather different way of producing such a movie and it's highly refreshing. For the first time, you feel for the bad guy in this movie. This movie demonstrates that everyone is the way they are for a reason. There's always a reason. The plot of this movie gains my upmost respect. An exceptionally thought-provoking movie which leaves you dwelling on it for a long long time...

Judd Apatow Productions

Overall rating: 6.5/10
Genre: Comedy
Overall value for money and time: 5.5/10

I tried a different approach to critique producer Judd Apatow movies as I thought his movies all have something in common. "Talladega Nights" and "40 Year Old Virgin" are in my opinion similar class movies with senseless comedy while "Superbad" and "Knocked Up" are similar class movies with crude humour. All and all, I for one, am not a big fan of his works. Still, I wouldn't assume this to be true for all viewers since one man's meat is another man's poison. I have friends who commented about how nice a movie they are, esp. "40 Year Old Virgin", so if there is one movie which you might consider watching, this would be it.

1. 40 Year Old Virgin

I watched this movie some years back so I'm not one who's too familiar with the details. All I can remember of it is as the movie title implies, there is man who's been left on the shelves for 40 years and is starting to give up hope of finding a girlfriend when things start getting better for him. It's a forgettable movie, for I am unable to regurgitate any funny scenes which created a deep impression. Still, I recall it being only an average movie for me - slightly above average humour, average plot, average casting, nothing fantastic. Also I'm not a fan of Steve Carell, should there be a movie you would want to watch with him in it, "Evan Almighty" is a better option.

2. Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby

Do I like Will Ferrell? Nope. Do I like racing cars? Nope. Do I like senseless humour? Nope. Well, it's real hard for me to like this movie. First of all, Will Ferell is under one of my "dislike actors" category, with Mike Myers and a few others in it. Another movie starring him in it is the remake of "Bewitched". Despite having Nichole Kidman in it, that movie was a total flop. One of the worst movies I've watched. Let's get back to this one though. There is however, an "up" side to this movie... Sacha Baron Cohen. Wonder who this fellow is? One might be more familiar with him being "Borat" and "Ali G" who also was the voice of Julien the monkey king in "Madagascar". Apart from the cast, the humour was good in this movie. I was senselessly laughing away during half of the movie. The movie is about a young man who is an exceptionally good racer. He has never lost a race before and because of that, his ego gets the better of him. However, his winning streak turned into a losing one when he lost in a particular race which he was greatly embarassed in. He must start to get his act together should he ever want to win in a race again. If you're looking for a movie that makes sense, this is not one. It's a good movie to drown your sorrows in and might just brighten up your day.

3. Knocked Up

The lead actor is simply repulsive. The lead actress, on the other hand, is the one who "beautifies" this movie. This movie is about a one night stand leaving the girl pregnant, who comes knocking on the door of the guy a few weeks later to inform him of the "good" news. They try to make ends meet and work towards a common goal - their newborn child. I'm not fond of the movie, for it has crude humour in it, by crude meaning "dirty" in a conservative Asian sense. Still, it might appeal to some viewers, though the humour may not be that funny, there is some plot in this movie.

4. Superbad

Another movie with crude humour. 3 underage young lads are obsessed with buying booze (beer) for a party which they are convinced would buy them a ticket to get laid. However, things didn't go as planned... and the movie moves in a direction which is highly impossible to happen in real life. Watch it for it being just a movie, not a life you can relate to. Too much thinking makes you hate this movie. There are great critiques about this movie, but overall, it was a disappointment to me. I guess I do not share the same taste buds as Americans, which is also true for the case of "American Pie".
