A disturbing pyschological thriller about a widowed detective tracking down a group of serial killers who murders in the name of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. It's a dark movie which is not for the squeamish or the faint hearted. Feels like a low budget film with unconvincing acting and using Zhang Ziyi in this film was a big mistake. She felt more suited for a horror film and Dennis Quaid couldn't deliver as the main lead. All in all, the plot wasn't as simple as it seemed but the ending wasn't enough to boost my impression of this movie. Passable.

The International

The whole movie was fairly boring, with only one climax shoot out scene which simply isn't worth sitting through 118mins for it. The names and jargons used were excessively confusing, making one lost in translation... though it's english they spoke. There was too much confusing dialogue, where some movies are applaudable for witty and humorous lines, this movie failed in both aspects. It takes great patience to sit through this movie, except for those who suffers from insomnia.

An interpol agent attempts to disclose a bank's consipracy to cover up an international arms dealing ring. It started off with a deadly way to wipe out those who were closing in on the conspiracy but it wasn't elaborated or expanded on later in the movie. The ending added to the demise of this film. A truly forgettable movie, an experience which will definitely fade away in time to pass...

Knowing

Knowing what you already know from the trailers is more than enough. Knowing what happens when the numbers run out, a novel and interesting concept. Knowing what happens just before the numbers run out, THAT, will disappoint... The plot of the story and the ending didn't synergize. Everything went well until the ending when a massive number of loopholes started surfacing.

Back in 1959, a time capsule containing drawings of a class of students on their perception of the future was buried in a new elementary school. 50 years later, the time capsule was opened and there was a "drawing" which contains a string of numbers. This piece of paper landed in the hands of an MIT professor, who later realised that the numbers predicted the great tragedies in history (then the future), with 3 dates still to occur. It's a difficult plot to summarize in such a short paragraph since most of it was well covered in the first 15 minutes of the movie. The movie set me at the edge of my seat right from the very start and as the story gradually unravelled, it got more and more intense. At the rate and direction which the movie was going, I couldn't see how it would disappoint me. I was wrong. The "solution" and "purpose" was too far-fetched. The most I'll disclose is that this movie is a mix of the movies "Number 23" and "The Day The Earth Stood Still". I shall keep the loopholes in the loop since the plot is the main attraction of this movie.

Don't get me wrong. This isn't a bad movie. The ending was bad, but everything else was decent - the story development, the build up, the concept and the special effects. Most of it made sense and fitted the plot. The acting wasn't top notch, but the cast managed to pull it off. Though the genre of this movie states that this is a suspense film, it has elements of a typical horror movie - the dark, moody settings and the eccentric characters. But don't worry, you don't have to mentally prepare yourself for apparitions or zombies at the end of the movie, but something supernatural is bound to happen...

This japanese movie deserves more than a standing ovation, it's simply one of the best japanese movies I've caught thus far. 2 simple words to sum up this movie. Elegantly Beautiful. My attention was undivided throughout the movie, and though I was fairly disappointed by the abrupt ending, it swept me off my feet when the credits rolled. A cellist who lost his job took up a new job as a funeral professional who prepares the deceased for burial and into the next life. Despised by most close to him, he battles all prejudices and finds new meaning in his life. A heartfelt movie with a handful of comical moments despite the seriousness of the theme. One sees life and death through a different light and the movie brings into perspective the harsh reality of life, that we all die some day - whether "beautifully" or not so "elegantly".

*Spoilers up ahead*. Apart from the abrupt ending, there was a scene near the end of the movie where I wasn't too fond of either - the protagonist's father lost grip of a stone, and it fell to the ground. I thought the slow motion cut back shot was unecessary in emphasizing the point. The director could have simply freezed the shot for the effect to kick in while keeping the scene in real time. Still, it's just my preference, but the ending did catch me off guard. I expected the father's belongings to be revealed or something. And yes, one of my favourite actress of all time, Ryoko Hirosue, can't really act. Though she had a minor role in the film, there was a good 15 mins of screentime at the end for her to showcase her acting prowess, but she failed to deliver. That's about all the bad points I can find about this movie.

There was a subtle NG shot near the start of the movie - where the protagonist was dining with his wife and he saw a job ad in the newspaper. He lost grip of a pickle, and popped it into his mouth in a natural way. Normally, this would take away the "perfection" of the cinematography, but I believed the director liked it so much he kept it that way. The struggle of life from animals' point of view such as bird flocks and salmon were disguised as scenic shots portrayed throughout the movie. I liked the way the director added comic relief through morbid scenes such as the first death of the old lady. The audience were ironically laughing their hearts away at the protagonist's expressions even though it should be a sad scene. I didn't even feel right laughing at that point, but couldn't hold my laughter as well. The tempo and mood gradually changed into a more serious and teary feel. There were hints throughout the movie the characters who were going to "depart" next but I thought the climax was the scene where the lady owner of the public bath passed away. Her death brought together the prejudices of the conservative japanese society and knocked them over like dominos, as one truly learns to appreciate the nature of such a job. Her death alone impacted most of the characters in the movie. I came to realise the harsh reality of such jobs, where 3 lonely people whose lives were slowly unravelled throughout the movie, unappreciated by the public, come together with a common goal - to bring peace to those deceased.

There were many subplots in the movie intertwining to boost this movie to near perfection. The support of your spouse, the "need" for a father figure, the prejudices of the public, the struggles in life, finding meaning in life and overpowering remorse are a few examples. The scene where the protagonist and his boss were having a meal of pufferfish roe together, and where they were both licking their fingers after the meal represented how the protagonist subconsciously sought for a "father" figure. The feelings of his father who abandoned him and why he didn't return after all those years was explained by the lady who worked together with him. Basically, the movie wasn't as simple as it seemed. I'm sure there were more of such scenes which I missed. And most importantly, I thought the significance of the stones was a great asset to the movie, in connecting the plot and creating a greater kicker ending. Also, one mustn't overlook the purpose of the musical instrument used - the cello. It has a mellow tune to it which enhanced the theme. I thought to myself, why wasn't a guitar used instead? Why not a piano? A violin would have similar effects but it lacked the "majesticity" in terms of size. The piano brings about a more romantic tune, similar to the guitar. The cello on the other hand, has the size, the elegance of how the instrument is played (which can be observed in the poster), and the low mellow tune which blended in with the theme like bear and honey.

Personally, I think the success of the film was hugely contributed by the protagonist's professionalism in acting. He was able convince the audience of his role, brought laughter, tears and appreciation to the profession. Of course, with a great blend of everything else - plot, casting, humour, dedication, romance, forgiveness, this movie will not fail to touch your hearts just like it did mine.

A former agent must save his kidnapped daughter from being sold to the slave trade in Paris within the next 96 hours before all hope of finding her is lost. This movie reminiscence previous blockbusters like the Bourne Trilogy as well as the Transporter Trilogy, and has the same "rawness" of The Brave One and Death Sentence in it. The greatest difference between this movie and the mentioned films is that there are no rules in this movie. The protagonist is not portrayed as the "perfect" lead, he breaks conventional stereotypes of the "hero" being all magnaminous and sparing the bad thugs' lives. In this movie, anyone who crosses his path dies. One can easily relate to his plight, and his love for his daughter. The pace of the movie spirals into seat gripping action sequences once the characters had been sufficiently developed; the director wasted no time in boring you with unnecessary character developments. Similar to Bourne and The Transporter, the protagonist was virtually "invincible", yet the director didn't make the fight too one-sided. Do catch the movie to find out more. The plot is predictable, but the cinematography was beautifully orchestrated and the acting was top notch. Easily one of the top films of the year.

Gran Torino

There are times where I don't totally agree with majority of online reviews. This movie is one of them. This falls close to Curious Case of Benjamin Button, which I think are overrated movies. But where Curious Case didn't have a climax, Gran Torino had one, making this movie more superior than the former. However, all in all, it's prominently a dialogue driven movie that might bore some to sleep. A grumpy korean war veteran (Clint Eastwood) unknowingly helps bring justice and reform his neighbour's son (Thao) in a dangerous neighbourhood. The nicknames that Clint Eastwood calls Thao are exceptionally amusing. This movie reminds me of Rocky Balboa, both of which spans around an aged and almost outcasted individual who is struggling to keep up with society. Clint doesnt want to make a mark for himself, but he unknowingly opens himself towards Thao who gives him a reason for living. This is a soul hearted movie which may appeal to some, but not to others. Though I might belong to one of the "others", I would still reccommend this movie to those who are in for a heart felt movie. This movie doesnt have a twisted plot, nor are there blockbuster actions in them, but it's on of those feel good movie which might just work for you.

This movie spans around a group of special abilitied individuals who must find a briefcase before a powerful organisation called the division does. The start of the movie explains the history of the special individuals and introduces different groups of them such as movers, watchers, pushers, etc. Movers are those with the ability to manipulate telekinesis, the watchers are able to predict the future and the pushers are able to mentally influence others. Well, it sounds amazing so far right? That was what I thought to myself as I sat through the first 5 minutes of the movie. But as the plot developed, this movie felt nothing more than a total waste of my time. The setting was badly thought of, and the cinematography cum soundtrack made this movie felt nothing more than a low (L) grade film. There aren't many L grade movies I can think ofhand, but one of the best examples would be Hunting Party. You'll know it when you come across it. Even though I wouldn't say that the movie is low budget, everything about the movie felt that way. Also, the plot of the movie had much potential for greatness, but the director didn't bring it out but instead slammed it straight to the slums. Imagine:

1. a Hollywood movie where a handful of cool abilitied americans are stuck in an entirely different country (Hong Kong)

2. where the lead spoke cantonese

3. where the cinematography felt like Chungking Express (a 1996 Hong Kong Blockbuster)

4. where there were occasional grainy screen shots which reminded you of Blaire Witch Project (a horror movie filmed entirely using a low grade handheld camera and where there was low light intensities)

5. where the tune of the music felt like a cheesy kiddo movie, all jumpy and cheeky, and being played throughout the movie even during serious dialogue scenes

It took the mood off everything expected of a decent movie experience. Not to mention major loopholes in the plot (similar to InkHeart). *spoilers ahead* Why can't the female pusher who escaped the clutches of the Divison just mindf*** everyone she sees? The difference in power between the lead and the Divison's head's right hand man was extreme, yet a screamer was able to cause death to the later. There were many scenes in the movie where the lead could easily have died but the reasons for sparing his life was lame. The ending and the concept saved this movie from utter failure. The movie will not fail to NOT disappoint you. Even though you may like Dakota Fanning or even Chris Evans, I suggest you give this movie a miss. Cos the best part of this movie, has already been mentioned at the start of this review.
